Most of the people ran away when the kid turned into that cursed creature (twisted one) and chopped off his (probably) sister's head off.
It was already explained what those creatures were in ch 9 and in the first chapter we saw what they could become. It's not surprising the kid took the drugs because he thought he could get powers of a witch with it.
The only goofy part is that all this was over what the kids thought was just a cute bangle that gave them a little status at school but obviously noting long lasting but, I guess kids will be kids.
