He fell in love with her but he did not understand it and became confused/troubled by his own feeling. He "liked" the black haired girl because she was acting different, she did not look at him with love in her eyes like the other noble girl or his wife....
until the end in the 1st life he did not understand himself or maybe he did since he choose suicide after he killed her
2nd life he let go of his feeling, handed her over to his brother and devoted himself to his true love (who does love him a little good for him)
