He had been serious f'd up since a kid by his father and the king. He had no one to look to for support and you can't say Estelle because she thought his father and the king were great. As far as why didn't he say anything to her thought he would get killed like his mother for disobedience. Like any abused child when you tell them not to tell they don't. He thought the best thing he could do was stay close to her, and when the king was going to betray her in away that would strip her of her honor he was willing to be the bad guy so she stayed the hero. Because she was important to him and being a hero was important to her.
