I thought the last chapter was pretty darn sweet. Even if he could never be cured, Shirotani was way better than he was in the first chapter. And the two ended up together and are happy. What more could you ask for?
Also, for everyone who says the author rushed or lost interest towards the end... I read that was due to Takarai Rihito being sick. You have to admire the fact that she banged out these final few chapters (including a 25 page ending) even though she's in poor health. Perhaps we'll see an epilogue when she's had a chance to recover.
