I've been reading the novel version since it came out and I'm now excited how the mangaka will draw them justly (≧∀≦)
I know you guys are effing confused rn but it all contributes to Taichi and Touma's feelings to each other.
on chap53 it mentioned that tiachi and Futaba's relationship still went on for 2 years despite Taichi and Touma's heart-to-heart talk beside the beach. What Touma said to Taichi maybe lingered even those 2 years he (Taichi) and Futaba went as boyfriend and grilfriend but in the end he (Taichi) still went on and accepted Touma's romantic feelings.
The challenges and discerns they had in highschool was like their (Touma's and Taichi's) own made gameboard of the Game of Life, that no matter what hardship or heartbreak that their friends ran on, there are still things that made them happy (the plus points Touma made for each obstacle that Taichi commented on, being the own made Game of Life "rigged" with happy points)
Masumi's change of heart might be because she accepted that her romantic feelings for Futaba will not be reciprocated? so she stayed as Futaba's best friend instead.
