neither. rix is struggling with the idea that nuah’s feelings are genuine. rix thinks he’s taking advantage of nuah’s kindness. it shows rix’s low self esteem and his unwillingness to commit because of it. also his communication issues... it’s actually really cool that the author is giving these characters real thoughts and emotions.
