That was the best way he could have resolved the problem while giving Alice a lot of leeway; MC is still too young to understand what he did
Alpheas is a fascinating character, his love for his wife, his wish for her to live happily and succeed ultimately ending up killing her. To doubt he loved his wife is nuts she was able to viscerally experience his love in his memories in her last moments. Obviously he didn’t understand that his wife was still happy regardless of not being accepted by society or not being able to wed, but that was because he’s a flawed character who’s own genius is a double edged sword. It didn’t help that his wife didn’t have the wherewithal to explain that to him properly either, just a lot of tragedy all around. Her death likely ended up making him become the old man he is at the beginning of this story.
