Im kinda thinking it's a game or fucked up reality. If we can believe protag the world used to be normal and now isn't. Love interest has a line earlier where he loses his shit on someone joking around and says "you do think this is a funny game to play" (or something like that) so my personal theory is some how the love interest caused all this and the only way out is to save Protag but obviously he keeps failing and the time loop gets reset. Id like to think of it as some kind of Devine punishment cause that sounds cooler then a video game.
