It was kinda obvious that it didn't/wouldn't end the way we hoped it would. I mean sure there isn't anything stopping us from imagining a better ending for them, but then every little detail at the latter part of the story suggests that he is in fact going to die. Plus, we weren't really left with much for us to assume otherwise. There were no clues or snippets of information that would give us any hope or lead us to assume that he didn't/wouldn't die in the end. He died.
