I think it's so that rebels would take a full win. ML killing the king would be an ultimate win for the Republicans after all. I think he knew they would get to both him and king if he stayed in the palace, but with Lorena on the way, he didn't want to take risks (and I assume he was planning to die here regardless). As sh*tty as he is, I think that's his point. I may be wrong though.

No he said he if he can’t have her he wants her to be haunted by the thought of him and I’m guessing that’s why he’s planning to die here and that’s why lorena says she’s not gonna let him do that and is making her way to the palace so his plan doesn’t work and her conscience stays clear of any thoughts of him
