I think what he is often describing is an addiction to sexual pleasure.
He got exposed to sexual pleasure way to early in his life because he got raped...and thanks to that he often wanted to feel the pleasure he experienced back then again but when he finally got to experience it again it wasn't enough and he thought that it would be better not to get into an other relationship because he thinks that he would just hurt his partner and himself with it and I think this is a worry of a lot of people that have an addiction. So I would think of it as a real mental illness.
Also he probably is afraid to get into an other relationship because of the experience he gathered with his ex.
So.. yeah in my opinion he really is mentally ill and needs support.

it's not really a mental ilness, it's a copying mechanism some victims develop called "hyper sexual" (bipolar ppl may also suffer from this, etc)

Well i don’t think so, to me he was just discovering his body like any child, it wasn’t really masturbation he was just too young to understand, but then his abuser use this to make him believe he was sick, after being abused he was badly traumatised and he just start thinking it was true and that he needed a lot of pleasure to be happy
