If anything adding more to the charactets back story makes it a deeper story.

Somehow, I don't think Jellal was also affected. Because, there is no magic like things that come out from his body. Like, even Zeref has it come out from his body. But, I don't know, it just my opinion.
I think Jellal and the other was affected because there was no magic coming out of his body and I think the reason he was down and the other Oracion Seis is because of the old man. If you look at it carefully we can see they were all defeated.
there were actually smokes coming out of the affected persons body.
I've been rereading this manga I think its more than ten time already but.... I just notice it that some chapters are missing like the "love tank"... Nagisa and Yukihito's story..
