This webtoon is making me exhibit behavior unbecoming of an adult woman. I giggled. Shameful. Do it again.
It feels like some people are just realizing how problematic Riftan is, but he didn't have to do this to be problematic. He has always treated her like an expensive car.
- He got a new shinny thing and he had to use it before he went away. An experience that left her visibly traumatized from the reaction she has at the inn.
- He was mad she hadn't moved where he wanted her to be.
- He assumed she was a spoiled brat without ever taking the time to meet her, because speaking to your wife comes second to taking her virginity.
- He got mad at her for getting herself in any kind of danger even if it was out of her control.
- He was immediately apprehensive about her learning anything (and becoming more independent).
- He was opposed to her using her newfound knowledge in practice.
Throughout all of this Maxi had a very hard time expressing herself because of her abusive upbringing but it's not like he really reached out to her either or at least not without a hint of frustration.
And if you like it that's completely fine THIS IS NOT MEANT TO CAST JUDGEMENT ON PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THIS WORK just a simple critique on the character.
If I may interject (with some spoilers):
- Consumating a marriage was a common practice because if she remained a virgin, her father could have annulled the marriage and married her off again while he was gone (SPOILER: though he wanted to marry her before and was rejected for not being good enough for her, her father changed his tune so he could send Riftan to war for their household so he may have pushed for the consumation so his new son-in-law couldn't back pedal and say he wasn't representing them.)
- I believe his knights were angry that she hadn’t gone to his territory while he was gone. He was more concerned she thought he was a monster or that she wasn't happy to see him.
- I agree with the talking to her needs to happen more. I wouldn't agree so much with the spoiled brat part. He believes since she grew up as a noble lady, she is used to a certain lifestyle and he wants to meet her standards, as misinformed as he is. He has an inferiority complex towards her because he put her up on a pedestal.
- All the rest of the points are similar to my explanation above.
SPOILER: He was actually a blacksmith apprentice at her father's castle when they were both young and he saw her a few times, even saving her from a young monster that broke in and attacked her. When he decided to move onto a better life, the side story in the book shows us when he is 16 and meets Ruth as they are in the same mercenary group. Riftan doesn't care about his life at all and when he and Ruth end up being the only survivors, the former is gravely injured. To take his mind off of the pain while he heals him, Ruth tells him to think of his happiest memory. This memory is of the few times he saw Maxi. As they travel, Riftan asks Ruth to do it again and again until Ruth tells him he can't keep doing it or it will drive him crazy/become addicted; he didn’t know that it was the same memory over and over. So Riftan is obsessed with Maxi and puts her on a pedestal, not seeing her for who she really is.
In the same vein, him being controlling would also be completely fine for the time. Either all of them are okay and none of them are okay. Also, it's fantasy, the time isn't specified. It's obviously not modern time or it's modern times for the fantasy world that evolved differently to "the real world". And even if it was, there was a choice to include magic as there was a choice to structure the characters that way and adhere to chosen societal standards. So all of that is to say that I personally do not think that any of that changes the morality of his actions.
Oh, I'm not saying his controlling behavior is okay either, just that his perspective shows why he chose the actions he did. For the first one, he really didn’t like the fact he forced himself onto her. I went back to the chapter (the beginning of this comic) and looked and it states that. Spoiler: And he didn't know much more about the act than she did, meaning it was going to hurt no matter what.
Spoiler: He's stubborn and he won't change; he will be forced to let her go. I think the novel has only gotten to their first reunion recently. I got burnt out reading so many chapters but I might pick it back up.
That would be an interesting twist I do think it would be good for her to spend time by herself to find herself
