I'm gonna be honest though the "let's stop slave traders" arcs can be annoying sometimes like in "Snow White with Red Hair" and "Yona of the Dawn". It's like they copied eachother. I remember it being so prevalent in historical romance manga and they felt the same.

Maybe if the subject is taken lightly or isn't the focus it shouldn't be included at all?

Some stories show the truth, that many people are powerless to stop the evil. It's horrible but that's just how it is. You don’t see people calling for Red Light distructs to be destroyed in manga. Like when the woman is selling her body people only talk about her getting bought out of the life. The system is the problem.

I did find that weird, but i think they're trying to portray indigenous people, "wild and strong", let's keep in mind 99% of the time these authors are asian, there'd imbedded racism in their culture unfortunately, unless someone explains to them i fear they won't understand.

It's because most Rofan MC and their kingdom are all white skin so they can also choose other color skin to represent barbarian, other country etc. Beside white skin, there only few skin tone left and they can't use black skin which can cause controversy so only left are brown color in different tone...that's one of the weakness of Rofan in saturation of white skin MC....

If there's only more diverse ethnicity of Rofan MC then there's no problem

Should they be pale white and fully dressed in the "Barbarian" attire? Because then everyone would complain about them being white and how they're white washing and stealing their culture. Happens all the time and look at what they're doing with literal white European historical figures, black washing them.

Honestly, I occasionally remember how Asian comics are Asian washing European cultures all the time. Zero historical accuracy or respect to the cultures being represented. The clothing is whatever the artists wanted it to be, which to me is fine because fantasy. Do not get me started on not even understanding the basics of Christianity, like in "Shiki" where they straight up used a Roman sculpted altar for Cain and Abel's sacrifice altar for the Christian God. Or how Asians just find Christian churches and Catholic preist attire to be cool looking, but show no respect to any of it and most are to lazy to even make up a fantasy religion symbol and just use a cross.

Racism exists throughout history and most Asian comics are against Racism and slavery. (I can't think of one that promotes it) That's why you're finding the slavery weird, because not only is it a sensitive topic that needs shown respect, but also something that has been common throughtout history and during the time periods these comics are usually set in. It's a balancing act that doesn't always feel right unless it's completely excluded or the main focus for an arc.

The "Barbarians" are usually shown to be civilized people, so to an extent I don't even see the argument. If the problem is that they're stronger than normal people I don't see the problem, because that's awesome and it makes you want to be like them.

"Call Me Master" has a tan ML and FL in a "Barbarian" country. She's a psycho slave trader who loses her memories and is murdered by her slave lover and time repeats itself. She would train the slaves to be taken and killed by the villian, which he likes to skin alive and keep in glass displays. The villian is a pale skinned man, *spoilers*. And guess what? A white skinned peoples country was conquered and turned into slaves!

"Sica Wolf" had "Barbarians" who's culture was Native American esque and they were tan. There were people calling it all racist and left. It's such a good story, what a shame. No slaves were mentioned.

"If a Mad Dog Bites the Leash" is a good at writing slavery and racism with fantasy races. It brings in the politics and the FL is a badass. Reminds me of Skyrim in a way.

"Predator Marriage" shows that the ML's culture is sophisticated and his people are abnormally strong. I think he was a green flag last I checked.

"Trapped in A Cursed Game As an NPC" has elves being sold as slaves and the black market is destroyed. (Black markets that sell slaves being destroyed is very common in Asian comics so it's hard to name them all)

There was this one manga where this character was white with blonde hair, blue eyes and was a slave to an Asian.

What about the "Ancient Magus Bride"? That girl had red hair and green eyes.

Aside from the last 2, I've read and loved the rest of the comics I mentioned.

The thing is, this is just a story. To me, this is just fiction and I always view these kind of things as a plot, a story in a fiction.
What's worrying is people that can't separate it from real life.

Yeah because they ideas used in fiction are pulled out of the cosmos. The “it’s fiction” argument is lazy.

The entire "it's just fiction" falls on its face because it was fiction (hollywood's 'the birth of the nation') that revived the literal KU KLUX KLAN. Following the release of that film, the KKK saw it's highest spike in membership, an estimated 4 million.

The issue isn't sensitive topics can't exist in media. It is that marginalized groups are always depicted in a 'historically accurate manner' in so many stories that don't even remain faithful to history, outside of reinforcing real life stereotypes that tan skinned people have been subjected to. The entire 'Dark skinned people are uncivilized, barbaric, backwards, tribal, etc' was propaganda that colonizers spreaded, in order to justify their atrocities under the guise of 'bringing civilization to these people'.

By constantly adapting this trope it further reinstates those narratives. Media representation has the power to shape how certain groups are treated in real life, especially ones that don't get to represent themselves.

Just look at how black/ brown people are already getting treated in real life, they are still held to these harmful stereotypes. Even right now, black/brown people are described as strong and dangerous, as other. This has been used as justification for discrimination against these people.

But if you look at the reverse white people always represented Egoistical supremacist, full of arrogant, treated other race like slave...it's just two side of a coin and what my original post only mean it's just hard to associate this fictional characters to real life because the difference in culture and over the top fantasy setting...like they're brown color but can you imagine them in real life using unbelievable strength? There's also nothing wrong with tribes with different color in some country there's not only one ethnicities...some there's more

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Fictional white villains being arrogant or supremacist ISN'T the same weight as what you're describing. Nobody is out here getting denied jobs, followed in stores, or shot because a villain code coded as "white supremacist" fed into a real world stereotype about white people being untrustworthy.

One stereotype has centuries of real-world violence and policy behind it (colonization, slavery, redlining, profiling) the other doesn't have an equivalent history of material harm. "Two sides of the same coin' ignores that stereotypes don't operate in a vacuum they either reinforce existing power structures or they don't.

It's not 'tribal societies exist' that's the problem, it's that dark skinned characters are disproportionately limited to that framing while other groups get the full range.

She got pale purple hair, the ml is not the typical overbearing noble kind of guy but looking average with average noble rank too and I like it but I forgot the title. I figured the empire would call any other land not owned by them or a rival kingdom a tribe due to population, power, and respect. Calling them savage, barbaric, etc. is reinforcing the same colonial discourse that frames non-Western cultures as exotic or inferior. Colonizers did this to ensure their narrative of 'bringing civilization to these people' had footing, despite the fact that the people they were colonizing were very sophisticated.

You should give 'Orientalism' by Edward W. Saed a read, or listen to an audiobook. It will give you so much insight as to why this kind of language is extremely harmful.

Since we're talking about dark/brown/tan skin in manhwa, unfortunately it's quite rare to find one in straight romance historical manhwa. Even if it exist, it will be like this one. 'Barbarians'. Well who knows maybe people with brown skin is an alien thing for korean (jk).
However, other than that genre, you able to find some. Not a lot but not rare too.
You may find in Yuri/GL, Yaoi/BL, Smut, Action. They're beautiful and sexy too.
