Yes after reading it for the second time I finally understood, their relationship at first was pretty shallow, You can see how Ed was so in love with McQueen that he was willing to do anything but when push comes to shove regret and shame took over his so called love. As for McQueen a selfish guy, after knowing Ed’s feelings he shamelessly took advantage and used it for his personal gain. Though I think he had feelings for Ed but not as deep.
Then there was this chapter nearing the end of the story which states that they finally reached each other, that for me was end game... a love without malice or selfishness. But the same feelings of love, respect and support to each other.
