They shockingly end up pretty happy. The ML is still a possessive criminal but a more high class type lol he also NEVER hits MC anymore. The MC got therapy and proper medication for his mental issues and the two of them are absolutely in love with each other. It may not seem “healthy” but there’s consent and genuine affection between them. They truly saved each other’s lives. That’s enough for me.
And yes this is all canon. I just finished the novel.
