I thought his illness might be cancer because he used the word fatal. If it was just a minor illness, he wouldn't have said it was fatal. If it was cancer and he beat cancer, it explains why he returned to look for her, as it takes years to recover, and it could have kept them apart.
I think he became ill and returned to the U.S. for treatment. During his absence, she likely moved to the countryside, possibly while pregnant. After he recovered, he returned to Korea but couldn’t find her. Alternatively, she gave birth in the countryside and stayed there. In the end, it was likely a bad miscommunication and loss of contact that prevented him from being a part of his son's life.

I want to know the main reason he went to prison, because I don't think it's for the death of his wife, as it was an accident. I think he went to prison for something else and is blaming his son as a way to guilt-trip him, because there's no way someone would blame a toddler for the death of their wife.
