still, i think it is the author's job to make the manhwa interesting despite their character background. this is ofc subjective, but there are some pieces out there which the characters are out of their mind, have traumatic past, yet still have great deliveries, example

vinland saga(thorfinn is sick in the head at his first arc, but i still can enjoy the story despite of who he is)
monster(johann is infamous psycho, it makes you despise him which i think the author want, but again the story is still great)

well those are just a few out of my head. this manhwa is just kind of lazy depicting their characters...again it is subjective. that's why i will put this on hold, at least until the ml got better development.
If you read the creator’s note, you’d know the original title was “Swirl,” referring to the ML’s messy mind, and it was later changed to “Borderline” because of his attachment issues. The story is also mainly from the ML’s POV, so you’re literally meant to see how messed up his mind is.
As for your references, I don’t think they’re really comparable. Banana Fish isn’t even an OG BL. Different genres and narrative intentions. You can dislike the character writing, obviously, but the mental health aspect isn’t just randomly thrown in to make readers sympathize with him—it’s central to the story.
sure, it is not random, not like i said it is random, just feels lazy. it is the author intention to show how messed up he is sure. it is the center of the story sure. but those are not delivered that well for me, that's my point. there must be a better way to show how messed up this is. this is just not it....
still comparable i guess, no matter the demographic and genre. seinen, shoujo, josei, bl, action, drama, all of them have psychological genre. i can't see why it is not comparable in terms of psychological stuffs, you can make interesting complex character and story in BL too, no one stopping. i am not saying he has to be like thorfinn killing people here and there for his late father and redeem, i am saying psychological genres are possible to be depicted really well. this character and the manhwa itself feel just meh....is the character understandable? yes, i know why he is like that. but is it good? nope, for me at least. inserting mental issues doesn't make a story good and complex automatically, there is a lot of psychological slop out there too. if you can grasp and appreciate this manhwa then good i guess....but i guess it is not for me yet ( ；∀；)
