Lol, rape isn't some fantasy trope you can just throw in and then pretend it doesn't mean anything. And nobody is saying rape fantasies are some new invention or that fiction = reality. Obviously people have been writing about rape in dark romance, dark fantasy, erotica, etc. forever. The difference is that when it's actually dark fiction, it's usually framed as disturbing, properly warned for, and the story at least acknowledges that what's happening is rape or abuse. Not every fantasy novel with smut was just randomly throwing rape into the plot and acting like it was cute.
That's why the sheer amount of manhwas casually normalizing rape and abuse bothers me. We're talking about BL/smut stories where characters are literally being sexually assaulted, yet the narrative barely acknowledges it, sometimes even treating it like comedy or just another part of the romance. And then you have readers literally celebrating MC blushing and debating which one of his rapists he should end up with. Like??? Be fucking serious.
And considering how low media and basic sexual-assault literacy already is, seeing people genuinely unable to distinguish rape from consensual sex makes it even worse. Saying “it's just fantasy” doesn't magically erase that criticism. Nobody is claiming people will become rapists because they read a manhwa. The issue is how the fiction is framing what is happening and how normalized it becomes when even the audience can't fucking recognize the assault.
And this isn't even the first time this author has used rape in their work and handled it poorly. So when people say “it's fiction, who cares,” you're missing the entire point. Nobody is saying authors aren't allowed to write fucked-up or dark content. Write whatever fantasy you want. But if you're going to depict rape, at least understand what the fuck you're depicting instead of romanticizing it, minimizing it, or expecting readers to treat it like some quirky romance trope.
If it's explicitly marketed as dark fiction, comes with proper warnings, and actually acknowledges the abuse for what it is, that's one thing. But we're literally in a BL smut manhwa where rape is being treated like comedy/romance, while people in the comments are casually discussing which rapist the MC should choose.
