Honestly, I think the author is only interested in writing an ultra-long story, even if it means destroying the plot. It's obvious they're doing this to keep readers engaged, probably to maintain the hype. It makes the story sloppy; there were so many other ways to imagine what happened after the attack and the match, without having to do something frustrating and angsty for no reason. They develop the characters only to ultimately not use them intelligently. Jk and Dan have already overcome their lack of communication several times...
