I guess it's easy to say that MC should just concentrate on his studies BUT this guy has been rejected all his life. Even when he is young, after so much failure and rejection, it's hard to just think positive. Esp that he never got what he wanted, other people kept making decisions for him - him ending as an orphan, pushing him to foster homes, returning him, etc. Just when he wanted something, he's rejected again.
