Im on chapter 53.. does it get better? Im really into the story and I like Riften as a male lead in general but... he does have violent verbal outburst at Maxi every other chapter he's present in. He's always crawling back and apologizing to her, but I think the better solution would be to stop screaming in your wife's face every chance you get.
Spoilers or something like that . . . . . . . . .. .. . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . Weeeell.... yes and no. Both of them will mature towards the end. (We are around less than half way, regards the book, unless they will put in Riftan POV and not seperatly.) Anyways, Maxi will gain more confidence in general and Riftan will very slowly realize that the Maxi he has in his head and his real wife are very different persons and get better with communication, or at least tries his best to do so. But its veeeery slow.However in my opinion he remains somewhat of a red flag.

Yes, he has issues. The side story Riftan POV gives a loooot of context about it. The problem is the communication, Riftan is hyperindependent, and don't trust anyone at this point. Maxi has also many issues, and coming from an abusive, neglecting household she tought that was what she deserves. Thankfully they mature and they relationship get better, but in the end its still not fully restored. He is somewhat in the impression that she is a real noble lady(as a knight he met many), so she is spoiled/fusssy/arrogant/good for one thing/weak, we need to remember that for man thats the norm in the UTOT world. You could see how they threat woman in general (see the female clerics).
