Griffith has never really aknowledged his relationship as friends with Guts, he considered him more of a weapon useful for his dream without realizing he was more than that. It never left his mind after Guts left, even when he was tortured, he gave up his dream to keep his sanity thinking about his link with Guts. He developped a hatred for Guts at that point, for "making" him lose his dream over friendship.
When he transformed, his heart froze and his emotions with it, he became a God Hand, Femto. Who only has one goal, realizing his dream. When he raped Casca, it was Femto wanting to break Guts, it wasn't really Griffith. It was just the embodiment of Griffith's true nature, the hatred towards Guts and his obsession of wanting control.
