Chapter 8: The priest meets with the editor's other adoptive son named Law Heller. With no words spoken from his lips, he undresses and gets down on his knees for the man. It is made clear that the priest used to have a sexual relationship with editor Heller till he got too old leaving his son as his replacement (no feelings involved.)
Chapter 9: Law Heller refers to Penny as a product, saying his father must have high expectations for the young boy as he usually doesn't buy "them" toys.
Penny was never given to John. He took him and murdered him—not what the priest asked him to do in chapter 4. The serial killer only intended to make trouble for the priest.
