It's not the same lmao. In Emma both parties are mutually attracted to each. Here, it is one-sided. Mary (maid) was never in love with the nobleman and it is implied she is a relationship with that officer/police guy (commoner) for a while enough to be engaged. If the noble guy tried to pursue her, he would only trouble her and genuine would be a spoiled selfish immature noble. By decided to give up, he respected her feelings over his own (she's clearly in a good relationship with her fiancé after all)
