I was getting vibes that Ray may be dead and Ban is keeping him around by some means (AI, robbot, zombie, etc) and that Ban isn't ready to let him go. And thats were ML is coming in.

I would say he was an orange flag. I could see him going towards the green side. He wasn't physically abusive or so obsesive.
The idea of a red flags is to flag "POTENTIAL" danger, not ponder over confirmed cases. A flag = an indicator.
