Asmodeus was offended that kdj wanted to create the best fable but wasn't choosing him immediately and was basically saying there's better options than him out there.
And as for switching gears, I'm just assuming it's him being his creepy greedy self. He hates kdj is going against him but he still "lusts" after kdj('s fables) and his way of making his story interesting.
