The reader doesn't miss the main message by judging that face whether it be in a negative or positive way (like if you watch the princess diaries and think, "did they really expect us to believe that anne hathway is an ugly duckling?"), and they instead just understand the idea of being "ugly" or unappealing by the standards of society.
don't worry when more antagonist characters show up you will see that is NOT the case...also that knight that hurt MC during the trombe hunt was NOT since he was a knight
