It't the ideals behind it. I actually had nightmares about this kind of thing. What if everyone goes crazy about something bad (like an apocalypse) and no one grabs power. No leader, no power, no trust. The only way you can live is by killing others for food and likes. But would the guilt stop you? Only that would differentiate a killer from an innocent (even thou the killing...).
So getting back to the topic, you can't kill anyone based on your opinion. No matter what they did. And no matter what you did.
Law is some ethically reliable people's opinion. Killing out of the law makes the other a criminal, too. Of cours, accidents happens, as well as self-defence.
The fact that they are heroes makes them obligated to comply with the law.
