It took me 8 chapters to realize the guild leader is probably a monster (likely dragon) who became humanoid. Dragons like collecting shiny things plus his eyes.

Yeah there's an older fic (completed) that has the exact same trope. There's even a fan video of that fic called coward montblanc.
If I'm right the fic op is talking about should be 'A study in geometric shapes'.
