I get Riftan in the sense of how this would look realistically. Riftan is a good man for the times they’re in. He does not abuse Maxi but there’s still an air of possessiveness and his word being “law” because of how women are looked at during this period. Also Maxi has been through a lot of danger that the average woman (especially not noble women) are not facing so Riftan feels to blame for that because again in these times one of a man’s main jobs is to protect and care for his woman and he’s said multiple times atp he feels he’s failing at that on top of also dealing with his own individual struggles.
