I dont think its unrealistic. They stopped because Ash realised he had done something he previously believed Karlyle was uncomfortable with, so he apologised and said it was because he felt out of control.
Karlyle felt overwhelmed in a way that wasn't necessarily good and he needed to process it, so, he walked away from it. That was after though, not really in the middle of it cause he already finished, so maybe you're referring to a different scene.
