To preface: I rarely ever leave comments on stories because I rather spend time reading than to comment stuff, but I will call out if I see people spreading misinformation or being a POS in the comment section. also, I am writing this with pure grit and I use em-dashes a lot cuz I am a writer (I HATE GEN AI) — I know I can refuse to engage but bro is so annoying cuz why do I see them under other stories I love too talking abt the same damn ridiculous points
First, I LOVE THE NEWEST CHAPTER
I understand that shipping is a huge part of every male-dominated manhwa/novel and sometimes, I do find it annoying if people focus too much on the potential BL ships over the story plot when it has a good story plot. Maybe because I am aromantic and don’t really care much for romance in an action-heavy series, but for most readers of this series from what I see, they actually care about the familial dynamics between Yoojin and the other characters and the story plot. However, the shipping between Hyunje (btw i use je cuz it is 제, not jae 재—not a big diff but if you’re Korean, it matters) x Yoojin is NOT uncalled for considering their dynamic. Even I find myself shipping them despite being someone who doesn’t really like romance in action-heavy series and find most romance especially in shounen action “unnecessary” (but that’s cuz most shounen mangakas dk how to write women well and reduce them to being the male characs’ love interest despite strong characterisation at first—I am so done with this kind of stories/srs)
Some may call it “queerbait”, “fanservice”, “created for fan activity” but at the end of the day, it is undeniable that these two have a bond that’s no other. If others want to call it romantic love, so be it. If others want to call it platonic love, so be it. I myself am in a QPR (queer platonic relationship) so… love is still just love after all and sometimes there’s no need for a label. What I don’t get is why a certain user is so pressed over this when they can simply ignore the fandom if they hate shippers. Whether you like it or not, shippers will always rule the fandom because they are also the ones who will generate most fan activity for the series, it is simply the truth. You cannot stop people from shipping… and tbf, it is even more ironic that they have a pfp of a RAPIST, yet they want to virtue signal so bad
To the user: I don’t give a f that you are gay because queer people are susceptible to homophobia and transphobia too. Especially now that it is Pride month, biphobia is ironically on the rise again—a lot of lesbians nowadays are unfortunately biphobic especially when a bisexual woman dates a man (which is both biphobia AND internalised misogyny). This shows that it doesn’t matter if you are queer, you can still be an offensive and rude person. I am queer myself (aromantic, agender, pansexual) and I do see homophobia and transphobia even within my LGBTQ+ circles and I always call them out. With the way you comment, you sound real homophobic and heteronormative because while I understand you dislike when others ship mlm relationships when there is no confirmation from the author… the way you said “hyunje/yoojin is straight” as if it is canon, it is also you asserting your own assumption of their sexuality onto them because the author has not explicitly mentioned that either of them is straight/srs. why is the default sexuality to you “heterosexual”?? Also, just because this series is not labelled “BL” or queer tagged does not mean queer characters or dynamics cannot exist in this series, same for all stories.
If you truly GAF abt pride, shouldn’t you normalise queer representation regardless of what genre/demographic the story is for? Also, do you REALLY need an author to explicitly mention “they are gay/queer/lesbian/dating!” or any other queer sexualities or dynamics for you to be able to see queer undertones? cuz that just means you’re media illiterate, sad to say, and you should read more books because not every author needs to SAY but they definitely can TELL. I see you comment under Witch Hat Atelier too, another story I love due to the found family trope, which I think it is ridiculous to claim that some characters are purely platonic since they are straight, when their sexualities are also NOT confirmed. FYI, the mangaka is an LGBTQ+ ally and I am so sure there are many queer undertones in the story so it is mind boggling how that flew over your head. Many people who enjoy the queer dynamics in WHA are QUEER people themselves, so who is to say that they are fetishising them, especially if their bond is stronger and healthier than most BL manhwas with rapist/abuser CEO x poor kid stories even in the romantic context
FYI: What is truly harmful to queer or gay rep is the oversaturation of the romanticisation of rapist/abuser x victim BLs and their popularity. Because cishet ppl who are homophobic will look at these kind of content and go “see, gay people are all sexual and are toxic!” — just like how transphobes always associate pedophilia to trans ppl despite statistics showing cishet ppl are more pedophilic.
look at how most toxic rapist/abuser x victim BLs are so successful compared to other BLs with healthy dynamics. You yourself should know that the guy in your PFP—Seungho—is a rapist, or maybe that has not processed for you, but no redemption can truly redeem a rapist or abuser, yet stories like POTN normalise the idea that “rapists/abusers can find love too even through rape/abuse because their victims will form a trauma bond with them and forgive them so long they change for the better” as if there aren’t rape/abuse victims IRL who are still suffering a life time trauma thinking about their rapists or abusers. Ever think about that? no, because fictional abuse or rape is fictional to you… so why don’t you apply the same logic with shipping
im such a sucker for haruaki i dont even care if it’s seimei or him but that last panel made me feel smth hhhh as usual, big brain moment of my beloved beanpole saving the day
