You´re not understanding something: this is about korean´s culture and any flaw is considered bad and unsuitable as a partner. He is half deaf and could probably lose his other hearing, his work is music and he has a father with a questionable past, he doest´n believe he´s rigth for her, he thiks he´ll be a burden in her life.
He's the typical character who sacrifices himself for love. You can see it in the way he kept that blondie around just because he felt guilty about his father´s doings.
