When I was younger, I read so many “Sold to One Direction” and “Kidnapped by the CEO” fanfics. I ate that trope up every time. Even now, I know it was never that deep and it was enjoyable if I distanced myself from the reality of what kidnapping/being sold meant. I really tried to detach and read this with an open mind.

I know these tropes are really popular in yaoi and that there are MLs that are worse than Jaekyung, but it’s just so disappointing that they get so much more hype and money than stories that respect gay people and showcase their love. As a queer person, it just feels dehumanizing how many straight woman goon to stories of abuse just because they find the men attractive. Don’t get me wrong, I am bi and very much attracted to men which is why I read BL.

But at the same time, if I was ever in a desperate situation where my only family was dying and the only way I could help her was to be forced to spread my legs and suffer through pain and humiliation, I don’t care how attractive the person is, I wouldn’t think that was romantic.

After 76 chapters of rape, psychological abuse, dehumanization, and disrespect, there is finally a potential romance plot in the horizon. I read this to give it a shot and thought that at the very least there would be slivers of romance throughout it. There were not! Jaekyung just out of nowhere was like “lowkey did I like him the entire time even though I only treated him terribly and viewed him as a nuisance?” and people are eating it up. I know they are gonna end up together after Jaekyung “redeems himself,” but I can’t be bothered to waste any more of my time thinking about this. Anyways… beautiful art!

You are a legend. Thanks for spitting the facts all in one go. The plot is very poor, and their dynamics are just a copy of their previous series, BJ Alex, which was very popular back then. I don’t want to be disrespectful while reading it illegally, but I’m really sorry for those who pay AND for the other authors who have a more “decent” plot but don’t get paid enough.

You exposed facts. This story is badly written and whoever claims the contrary lacks media literacy. That being said, it is consumed for entertaining value and not to reflect or to examine any sort of message. Self indulgent entertainment. Also, just a reminder that it's not any different in the shoujo world. Just because they are hetero ships, woman dont neccessary get to have valid representation as a rule. It's not a problem only concerning queerness.
The media world is almost entirely built through the male gaze and inescapable patriarchy values. If you are not the default hetero dominant male, you can expect your perspective/experience to be lousy and carelessly represented. And there is also, the cultural divide between western values and asian values. But at the end of the day, we as readers also need to be aware of the material we consume. Read tags, make our own lists, validate the recommendations we get. There are many number of good yaoi/BL out there, with depth, excellent writing and valid representation. They might not always hit the popularity charts, but they exist. So don't come to these type of works expecting to find things they never even use to advertise the work itself. Jinx is nothing more the glorified porn with a hint of story telling and above avarage art. But as crass as it is, there is little sense in judging it in sense of valid queer representation. Not even all gays works are queer, mind you. And as a rule, the viewer/reader should always remember they hold to power as to how much they inmerse themselves in a fictional world. Not all works are meant for you to empathize and assume the POV of a character. You can still enjoy things watching them go by right outside your window. If we were limited to only ever practice "ethical" reading. The world would be a very dull place.

    :D
