Idts, if that had happened he would not be so hell bent on achieving his brother's approval. His parents or grandfather for that matter didn't love him but his brother paid him attention. This is what put his brother on higher priority in mind. If anyone other than his brother had properly interacted with him as parents interact with their children, he would not be so attached to his brother. He did try connecting with his parents like you can see him interacting with his mother as a child.
