one of my favs but i wish the author was able to spend more time grappling with soongaps grief around mojil, especially when entering a new relationship with bongchun near the beginning. like mojil had JUST died. this isnt to say something ridiculous like “soongap moved on too fast!!! he doesnt deserve mojil” or something; i also understand there are probably people out there that actually do move on from grief like soongap does in the story, but i just feel like there was a missed opportunity to explore grieving a loved one that was taken from you when moving onto the next relationship. i think the author could have done that really well.
generally it also kind of just felt like it couldve been explored more in general. soongap’s grief was definitely discussed, but it felt… not very deep to me? more like it was peppered throughout the story rather than being respected as the literal impetus to the story. i could see people disagreeing with me here though
tbf u could argue im biased lol. my heart genuinely hurt when reading through mojil and soongap’s past and i just felt kind of shafted when there wasn’t more of a focus in it
i think so too. i understand not wanting past relationships to be brought up again but what soongap and mojil had was a good one until time became a thief. it would’ve been fine to show soongap mourning him at times as mojil was an important part of his life at one point.
The thing is, he have no idea how to or have the privilege to griefe him. His guilt, relationship and socioeconomical status eclipse the whole process. So his grief went straight to depression and suicidal thoughts the whole way through.
I feel "peppered throughout the story" is a disservice, the whole 1st act was him grieving mojil's death (arguably also on 2nd arc with his attempt in helping the lady) in a numbed and suicidal state. When he about to die he remember mojil, when he tries to die he remember him, when he actively tried to live he think of him. Even when he see bongchun, he see mojil instead, one of the reason he warm up to bongchun was because he remind him of mojil. They have similar gentle downturn eyes.
The stages of grief was just cut off and only when he is physically well enough, he had the capacity to cried and grief him, its just at that point he already accept that he is no longer with him... and only then... he start to let go and see the future with bongchun. (This part might be mixed up cs its been a while)
