He's still a grade-A asshole but it would be a little unrealistic to expect Jaekyung to just change a lifetime of trauma and nurtured personality overnight. I can notice that he's actually trying but he literally doesn't know HOW. He's never had someone in his life from whom he can learn how to love the correct way. I'm curious to see how that'll change though.
