out of all the BL mangas i've read i realized noncon (rape) is a very common trope? but it's not as common in things you'd find in other countries, or even on the hetero side. normally i'd assume it was a writer's fabrication of what life as a homosexual is like, but because there's so many instances it's hard to take it with a grain of salt. is it just common in japan for this to happen? or is it implying rape is a necessary element to homosexuality? it just seems weird, because people seem desensitized/uncaring as well. rape as a plot device is an odd thing to be familiarized with.

    HamesTheJames May 30, 2018 4:48 am

well you see, most gay people are not familiar with getting raped, so i don't think the fabrication theory makes sense because most people understand getting raped as a man very rarely happens, unless you count prison rape, then its almost the same percentage as woman rape crimes

    oh yesssss May 30, 2018 4:51 am

    Just realized, huh..

Yaoi is not representative of actual gay culture. It's made mostly by straight females for straight females who have little idea of what they're talking about, built on mostly baseless stereotypes. Also, it's not rape to them. It's just forceful sex because the seme loves the uke so much.

    Anonymous May 30, 2018 4:54 am

Probably Japan just being weird tbh

i'm aware a lot of females make it with very little actual knowledge, but the fact SO MANY females would do the same thing makes it a little more real to me, personally. i also have plenty of gay friends myself, and have had discussions with others about how many homosexuals in our lives have went through some sexual trauma (typically from family). it's more common than you think. also, the word "rape" to describe the scenes is used repetitively by the victim in many works. any scene where consent was not explicitly given is rape, regardless of how much the attacker loves them. forced sex...is rape, lmao

to be fair, there's also a very big double standard in play for these types of things. females have such a large percentage of reported rapes compared to men because they usually come forward (which is great!) while men tend not to (especially when raped by a female), because the level of humiliation is much higher. the same goes for when a man is raped by another man. masculinity tends to get very fragile, and assaults don't get reported. on the topic of gay people not familiar with rape, i disagree because a decent portion of the homosexuals my friends or i have met have shared stories of molestation or worse things in their lives. these cases also went unreported, because family members were the attackers. of course not all homosexuals have been molested, but based on my encounters, a decent percentage has been.

yeah a lot of rape goes un-reported, even with females, which makes it very sad, although i never mentioned anything about gay people not knowing how it feels to get raped, and when you say masculinity is fragile, well you kinda just were mean to an entire 50% of the population right there XD, i don't think that is the reason it goes unreported.

i worded my statement the same way you worded yours? you said most gay people are not familiar with getting raped, and i added onto that? i didn't make any generalizations. i also didn't say all masculinity is fragile, i said it tends to be. this of course leaves room for men to not be too ashamed to report anything. having a fragile masculinity is not necessarily a bad thing, i honestly don't think anyone really cares anyway. regardless you're entitled to your opinion, but i think it's good to look at the facts over personal sentiments as well! i'll link you to a report written by ohio state uni that can say this much better than i can, in case you want to look for yourself: https://www.odh.ohio.gov/~/media/ODH/ASSETS/Files/hprr/sexual%20assult/appendix182011.ashx

From an external point of view, for some reason porn, hentai, mangas and television are normalizing things like rape, abuse, molesting in public areas, etc. The fact these contents exist is not what is worrying, but the quantity and how much they are consumed. Is it because they live to these stuff daily? Is it part of a protest to a culture dominates by sexual aggression and patriarchy? People say they have no effect in real life, but that is not true. The more you read it, the more you internalize, the less you feel shocked when you read it. And for some reason, Japan produces a lot of these content.

i agree!! it throws me for a loop when someone complains about the fact something contained rape, and the only response was that if they didn't like it they shouldn't have read it. nobody should be comfortable with reading things containing rape/molestation at all.

Totally. Rape should be something disturbing to read, but now I see people romanticizing this stuff??? And it’s not that I think that if you read/draw about rape you are or will be a rapist, but turning it into such a normal thing is very wtf

i'm looking for a yaoi manga, fantasy/supernatural genre, where the uke says the opposite of what he really means (and can't control it) but the seme understands what he's saying anyways. i remember one scene where the uke stole sake from some group of people, and got busted for it???? thanks
