so the flash back will end with the creepy uncle sexually assaulting her and varkas coming to save her. he orders her to go to her room while he deals with the rapist. she’s really upset and this is one of the reasons why she hates people, especially men, touching her. he comes back and says he’s been exiled, he’ll never set foot in the country again. she screams at him for not killing the guy, and she gets irrationally anxious that he’ll come back. she starts throwing stuff at varkas and sobbing, and then that was how varkas time as her escort knight ended.

so basically now they’re back on the pilgrimage and thalia starts noticing her mother’s attendants are acting suspicious and pass around a mysterious vial. she gets her hopes up that they’re going to poison gareth or ayla but then gets anxious if they poison varkas instead. she refuses food because she doesn’t trust her mother not to poison her either, and stays up night to make sure varkas is still alive. then wyverns attack the camp and thalia get seriously injured. it’s important to note that thalia ran to varkas for safety in the middle of the attack, he was about to run to her, but ayla screams and he runs to save ayla instead. thalia gets picked up by one of the monsters and while they do kill the monster, thalia is sent hurling down a ravine and then rocks have buried one of her legs completely. they find her but her leg is mangled so they have to take her back to the imperial palace asap. when they get back, elven mages try their best to restore her leg to be at least still he walkable, but the cost is that her knee is slightly deformed and there’s a bunch of rough scars that can’t be healed with magic. since thalia is permanently disabled now, the emperor orders varkas to take responsibility by breaking off his engagement with ayla and take thalia as his wife instead. varkas agrees if thalia agrees, then so and so happen and yeah now they’re married and i haven’t read past this yet but i have general spoilers for the novel that’s up until the latest chapter

It's Barkas "punishment" given by the emperor because he failed to protect his daughter. Afaik her death was off screen but she died because a tower fell on her and she was found under the rocks.
