I don't think that you understand. Your child upset because your action not Ashley's. She wants your attention as much as you gave to ashley. It's simple. Not complicated things about her situation or anything. I hope in the future Mildred not only treat Ashley special but her own daughters too. They are smart, cute and mature. They are beautiful in their own way
I don't think you also understand mildred's point, Ashley lost both of her parents at such a young age, nobody is there to teach her anything beside mildred, as you can see the two sisters are already smart and mature except Ashley, who is very clumsy for her age, and that's because nobody Is there to teach her. It's not that mildred is neglecting her two daughter, she just want Ashley to be as smart and mature as them.

Okay both daughters are mature but they can't read minds, they don't know their mother is doing all of this to help Ashley because she lost her mother early, so from their point of view it's favoritism. When you see that the mother is h24 with a girl who is not her real daughter, and who always congratulates her while for the other two there is not even a little bravo, normal that the girls are in these conditions. So for me Mildred is wrong or she does it wrong

Yeah, I know she can't read mind. But in her point of view her mother gave blatant favoritism and just never talk about the reason before. And as you already know.. ashley is the most beautiful between the three. So it's really burden her minds because she thinks her mother abandoned her over beautiful child. If Mildred just gave a little bit more attention, this will never happen. Iris and lily already know ashley circumtance and they understand it. But it helps her character development (maybe). So that's that. You must not belittle the power of jealousy.

Mildred's point is good but I think that is not the right answer for the situation now. Imagine you as Iris and finally complain to your mother and she is just like "you must understand blablabla" without comforting you first. At this point the child will even be dissapointed for speak up her mind.

Iris question is not 'why do you favour her more than us? ' but more to the line of 'why do you even love ashley?'. To that question, Mildred gave a well enough answer.

While their jealousy is understandable, it doesn't make Mildred in the wrong simply bcuz she did what she had to do, helping the troubled child in the bunch. Like when Iris dress is messed up, she personally mend it up with adding more flair to it and that not favoritism. Unfortunately, Ashley always turns out to always be the troubled child hence needing more attention. Mildred probably should does it all more properly but really, she doesn't really do that bad of a job.
