Sword of the inmortal, maybe? Gore and dramatical. And Berserk? I didn't read this one.
Also, claymore is a classic but is not settled in japan at all. Pretty epic one tho.
Full metal alchemist is another classic, "steampunk".
Am sure there are more, but those are the ones I've read...
