It makes no damn sense for satoko to live and not look for shinpei. It also makes no damn sense for shinpei to leave without seeing satoko get buried if he thinks she died. Was it even said that she died? Maybe shinpei not growing old with satoko was his punishment for all his wrongdoings. And maybe satoko living a normal life is what she deserves after being treated like an object that could be married off to any rich man.
