The thing is that in Japanese when phrasing things you don't have to precise plural or singular, since it's easily understood which one it is with context (there's no such thing as adding a "s" at the end of words). Which is what Yana was playing with in the Japanese version.
It doesn't translate as well in English obviously, and many translators, with the context they had, phrased things in singular. With English grammar you have to choose between the two after all.
That might have contributed to many not noticing it, because they were misled with the translation.
