There was definitely a better way of punishment. I know there are a lot of people that are going “it’s an apocalypse, it’s already chaotic, if you let one crime go unpunished then everyone is going to do it.”
However, I feel like even in this apocalypse… there can be different punishments for different crimes? Like, for example, Negan from the Walking Dead. Dude didn’t immediately say “instant death” to every crime. I will admit even his punishments were inhumane and manipulative to instill fear, but damn.
All that father wanted to do was help his child. He did steal, but did no one think “hey, solitary confinement sounds a little better for this type of crime”. It’s not like the punishment of said crime being death is even deterring people from doing it.
