So basically, the salt mine arc (it's really long, I did my best to summarize it) starts with Michele innocently trying to surprise Ian with a meaningful gift, completely unaware that Katya has manipulated him into walking straight into a deadly trap set for Ian. Having realized that Michele is Ian's weakness, she hires a mercenary disguised as a gamekeeper to lure him into the mountains knowing Ian will go looking for him.
When Ian comes back and finds Michele is gone...he's consumed by jealousy, anger, and fears of abandonment while convincing himself that Michele has betrayed him. Yet...despite repeatedly insisting that he feels nothing for Michele, he ventures into the mountains alone to find him. He ends up confronting the mercenary and is gravely injured protecting Michele, who ultimately kills the attacker to save Ian. Michele then masters all his strength to carry the wounded Ian to a lodge in order to care for him.
And this is where things get really emotional because their physical struggle for survival becomes an emotional reckoning. Ian gradually opens up (partially) about his traumatic past and his deeply rooted belief that he's unworthy of love. His insecurities lead him to repeatedly question Michele's devotion to the point of offering to annul their marriage and suggesting Michele marry Katya instead. But Michele finally confronts him for constantly assuming his feelings and making decisions on his behalf. He makes it clear that he loves both Ain and Ian regardless of his identity or past (this arc and the wedding night arc really shows Michele's growth as a character and husband). And it's where Ian FINALLY confesses his feelings. "...Me too" Ian answered in a trembling voice. "Me too...I love you, Michele."
