Most likely because 9 can be pronounced "goo: and most eng speakers would say G-goo or something goo to pronounce his name
9 is pronounced as gu in Korean. So his name is basically just Jigustar when reading Ji9star. I'm guessing it sounds just like jigu when yeowon calls him ji9 too, not sure how close the pronunciation is though considering it never clicked for him.
Also apparently there's two different pronunciations so maybe that's why it didn't click.
