This is the other side of the recurring 'redemption arc' that everyone wants. Sometimes a toxic and very dangerous relationship stays that way. The MC just learns to live with it and makes the best of it, is bittersweet and sometimes tragic but not far from what some people live irl (living with someone toxic and enduring)
