I started reading this with an open mind, expecting it to be a BL story that's a bit twisted. But no, this is way deeper than a "love story"- if you can even call it that at all.
This manga is a good portrayal of the cycles of abuse and how it trickles down into everyone around you over time. The relationship between M and J started out as a power imbalance, and then turned into a toxic co dependency. I do believe at the very end J still loved M but hasn't had the will to live for centuries. At the first sign of freedom, he took that chance. (you can kinda see how his eyes have dulled during their last moments...)
J surrendered himself completely because he knew how he wanted it to end. He knew he wanted to disappear and not let "love" drive his every move like it did in the past. I also believe if J knew how to love people in different ways other than lust/romantic, he wouldn't feel so lonely. But then again, his experiences would never let him get there. In the end, he chose to continue the cycle. ╥﹏╥
