Everytime I see stupid takes on historical undergarments I want to fight the author... Corsets were only tightlaced in the victorian era for like only a decade, corsets were just bras of their day. Plus tightlacing like here would damage the corset really fast and it's usability time would decrease dramatically. Women weren't stupid and they didn't just use corsets to get the fashionable body shape. They used petticoats, padding, extra fabric etc. Also corsets Help with posture and spine, even in modern times people with scoliosis use corsets to help their backs. Even pregnant women would wear corsets and just loosen their laces... Also you can't change the fashionable body shape and the fashionstyle just because you want to, people will laugh in your face if you show up to high society dressing in some weird ass dresses. I will agree on this is a fictional story, but the rest of the things you said makes no sense ;w; The reason people didn't 'bathe' was because of cholera and black plague which sweeped through europe and killed 1/3 of the population and they didn't know what caused it so people began avoiding crowded places and bathhouses. Nobiliy still washed up in their own estates. But there was also a religious aspect since Christians get baptized so some of them claimed 'They were cleansed from birth and didn't need worldly cleanliness' or whatever. We still have shampooo recipes for wealthy women from this 500 year long era. Now coming to the 'Changing the dress shape slowly' Think about 2010's when skinny jeans were extremely popular, if a hot person went outside wearing really baggy jeans from like 1990's would they 'change' the popular fashion and the popular body silhouette of 2010's or would they be just a hot person in unfashionable clothes, if you said the latter then you are correct. Fashionable clothing do change but it takes decades but at the same time it doesn't stay same ever. So if we are talking about let's say a 500 year period, the body shape, the popular clothing, their fabric, their motifs, their lacing would be constantly changing. Corsets were only dangerous when they were tightlaced, which was an inappropriate use of the corset - most people didn't wear them like that, which is why even in its time, the activity was widely criticized. If people were so stupid back then, how come most of the criticism of tightlacing comes from that same era? How come as soon as people started tightlacing, inflexible corsets fell put of favour and the designs of corsets were improved and altered until they eventually led to the bras we wear today? Don't just assume everyone was stupid by default. Humanity didn't go from stupid to sensible over a single decade, every scientific understanding we have today is standing on the discoveries people made in the past. We can only sit here on our high horses because people of that era were just as curious and observant as we are today.
